Unravelling Domestic Violence as a World of Work Issue: A Feminist Analysis of Canada's Employment Laws and Policies
This talk examines domestic violence as a workplace issue, exploring the relationship between violence and employment. Drawing on doctoral research, it reviews Canada's emerging employment laws and policies and considers how assumptions about violence, work and survivors shape the legal response.

Sofia Cornejo is a PhD Candidate in Law at the University of British Columbia, where she is expected to graduate in Fall 2026. Her research interests lie at the intersection of employment law and feminist legal studies. Her doctoral dissertation examines domestic violence as a world of work issue through a comparative analysis of emerging legislation in Argentina and Canada. Using a feminist lens, the study explores the tensions underlying the legal understanding and response to domestic violence in the workplace, including the conflict between ideal victim and ideal worker expectations, as well as the persistent notion that domestic violence is a private rather than a workplace issue. Sofia also holds an LLM from the University of British Columbia and previously worked for four years as a court clerk at an employment law court in Argentina.
